Hello Friends,

I often write these articles with the mindset of upskilling. Through the research, I hope to pick up a thing or two. What frequently happens though, is I end up learning more than expected... What began as an article about my experience visiting Chiang Mai’s hidden rice terraces, diverged into a pursuit to solve an issue in the supply chain.

Those who know me well are familiar with my appetite for rice. Often highly amused by my preference for commercial creamed rice in favour of freshly made, they gifted me tinned Ambrosia rice pudding for my birthday. As you can imagine, they find the whole thing hilarious. And while I go along with it, I am secretly delighted to be at the expense of the most decadent of jokes. But there is a problem, for my rice craving to be satisfied, the sacred grain must travel from far ends of the planet, from countries like India, China, Thailand and Japan where it invariably thrives. To appease my conscience and thus shorten the supply chain, I happened upon an unlikely farmer from Austria, growing organic species of rice and willing to ship to Ireland.
